Are There Gaps in Your CV?

If you are returning to work after taking time off to be at home with your children, you may be nervous about your ability to move back into the workforce after this prolonged absence.

However, there are many businesses and companies who would prefer to hire more mature and already experienced workers over fresh graduates, you just need to know how to present yourself.

As a stay at home mum or dad, you will have a gap on your resume and this is the first give away to a potential employer that you have been out of the workforce for some time.

Therefore, make sure you address this gap in your employment in your application so that your employer knows the gap isn’t anything more serious like having time off because of a work injury claim for example.

Pointing out to your potential employer that you have been a stay at home parent should be done in your resume, not in your covering letter. The covering letter is where you reconcile your skills and experience with the skills and experience the job ad is asking for.

Your resume is where you detail your working and employment history and show where you gained the above skills and experience. Therefore, depending on the style of resume you are using – which in turn depends on the type of job you are applying for and the experience you already have – you could mention your absence from the workforce in your career objective or career profile on the very first page. This is simply a summary of your major achievements and where you hope your career will head in the future.

Alternatively, you can list your time spent at home under your employment history and include the skills you utilised during this time as well as any courses you completed and any volunteer work you took part in.
