A Chance for Change

When you first lose your job, you may feel as though it is the end of the world. Whether you were fired or your company was simply downsizing or restructuring and you lost your position with the company, it is bound to be a shock.

Also, whether you saw the chance coming or not, you will still not be prepared for it as contemplating looking for another job and actually losing your job are very different things.

However, losing your job will only be the end of your world if you let it be. Therefore, take this opportunity to re-evaluate your career path and you may end up seeing the change as the best thing that happened to you.

When you lose your job, your first thought will be of finding another one and you will therefore most likely be reviewing your resume and career history. As you do this review, think back to the times you spent with your previous employers and in your previous jobs. This will give you a chance to work out the positions, industry and work you most enjoyed and excelled best at and can help give you some idea of where you might like to direct your career in the future.

You may even be considering a change of industry as you have looked back at your employment history and found that what made you happy was the type of work you were doing not what you were actually working on.

Or you may have realised that the position you were in was not right for you and you would like to change that with your future job. You may have realised that you have enough experience to apply for management positions and this will give you a chance to dramatically advance your career.

Or you may have realised that you were unhappy in your management position and that while you received better pay, you worked poor hours and were more stressed. This may lead you to consider a non-management position or you may simply look for one with better conditions.

The most important thing is that you don’t give up and while you have lost your job with one company, you are still a qualified, willing employee and should have no trouble finding your new career direction.
