Answer the Phone

When you are applying for jobs, you can’t wait for the phone to ring with your potential employer asking you for an interview or to tell you you’ve got the job. However, the way you answer the phone could affect the way you appear to your potential employer.

For example, if you are waiting for phone calls about your job applications, make sure you answer all phone calls politely. Also make sure you ask your family to do the same with the home phone and make sure that if you have any younger brothers or sisters, or young children, that they know how to be polite and not give your potential employer embarrassing information before you can get to the phone.

Also check your answering machine message and the message on your mobile phone’s message bank to make sure they are appropriate and that the messages clearly give your name so your potential employer is sure they have the right number.

However, it is best to try and keep your phone with you when you go out so the employer doesn’t have to leave a message and wait for a reply. It is also important that your phone is always fully charged as you don’t want to be talking to your potential employer or accepting the job while the phone goes flat.

If you do have to return a call from the employer, make sure you do so as soon as possible, but also at a reasonable time of the day. For example, during business hours and try to avoid calling during lunch.

Doing all of these things will ensure you present yourself as a responsible person and are available to the company when they need you.
