Be Truthful

When applying for what we consider to be the perfect job, it can be frustrating to find that we are missing one qualification or a few years too few of experience. It can therefore be very tempting to lie on your resume in these cases but it won’t be worth the trouble in the long run.

While lying on your application may secure you an interview as you have mislead your potential employer about your qualifications and experience, you are going to be found out.

You will either be found out right there in the interview when you can not answer sufficient questions which relate to your ‘experience’, or you will be found out if you get the job and are later asked to display your exaggerated skills.

While you may think ‘that’s fine, I’m a fast learner and I’ll just pick up the skills I say I have on the job’, it’s not fine. While you may think that, it is not always as easy as picking things up on the job.

Also, when your new employer finds out you don’t really have the skills you said you did, you will also be found out as a liar and this is not a good way to start off your new job or career.

It is much better to be upfront with your potential employer and explain that you only have two years industry experience instead of the required four years, and then go on to sight referees and instances in your past working career which show you are a fast learner.

Also, if you do lie to your potential employer, it could damage your chances of finding work in your preferred industry as the word can get around that you are untrustworthy and you may therefore miss out on a job which was perfect for you.
