Email Job Application

With more and more business and communications being conducted over the internet, it is not surprising to see that many employers ask for job applicants to email their résumé and application, instead of send it by post.

Emailing job applications means that the employer can look at them when they have the time and don’t have to worry about applications cluttering up their office until then. It is also a bonus for the applicants as they do not have to worry about the reliability of the postal system and they also have an extra day or two to complete their application as it will arrive moments after it is sent.

However, email is a medium which can lull applicants into a false sense of familiarity and they will forget all about the hard work they have put into producing a professional resume and application.

For example, the employer advertising the position may have a funny name, or the same name as a TV or movie character. This does not give you the right to employ the signature line of the employer’s name sake in the salutation line of the email as your application will risk being sent straight to the trash folder.

Also, you will have hopefully written an application letter to accompany your resume, however, do not simply paste your letter into the message of the email and attach your resume. Attach both the resume file and the application letter file and write a quick, professional note in the email message, making reference to your attached files and the position you are applying for, the rest of the information required should be in the application itself.

Your email software should also have a spell check function so make sure your run it before you send the email. If it doesn’t write your email in word and check the spelling there before pasting the text into your email.

Also make sure you take note of any special requirements the employer has asked for. For example, have they asked for specific information to be put in the subject line or do they want the applications to be in a specific file format? The most important thing is to carefully read all of the conditions of the application and follow them closely.
