When looking for a new job, there are often more obstacles than simply finding the perfect suit to wear to the interview. Often you are already employed and looking for a new and better job than the one you already have.

If this is the case, you will have to be careful about how you conduct your job search to ensure that you do not aggravate your current employer as you may not get the first job you applied for.

Therefore, as close as you may be to your fellow employees, don’t gossip about your job search. While you may only tell one or two people, how many people do they tell and office gossip does not always go unnoticed by the boss.

Don’t use the office equipment for your job applications. This means no printing or photocopying your resume, no making interview follow up calls on the work phone, no working on your resume on your work computer and no applying for jobs using your work email or fax machine.

Instead, you should always give out your mobile phone number and if it does ring with an interview, take the call away from your desk. Also, set up a separate email account, there are plenty of free, easy to set up email hosts, to ensure that your boss, or your IT department, isn’t alerted.

Also, if you are going to an interview after work, you will probably put in more effort with your clothes, hair and makeup. Therefore, try to dress up several days every week so no one in the office gets suspicious of where you are going when you leave early all dressed up.

Most importantly, you will need a referee to put on your job applications. While you can’t put your boss as your potential employer may call them before you actually have the job, you can confide in your more immediate manager if you feel you can trust them. Alternatively, you can ask a regular client if you can put them down as a referee, keeping it quiet of course.
