Expected Hours
If you are still at school or studying at university or taking any sort of tertiary education courses, you are probably looking for an extra source of income as there are not only books to buy, but there are also parties to go to, fuel to pay for and clothes to buy.
Therefore, you are probably hunting around for a part time job to help out with a bit of extra cash. Luckily there are plenty of part time jobs for students in department stores and fast food restaurants around the country and there are plenty of shifts available outside of school and study hours.
When you get an interview for such a position, the interviewer and employer will be aware you are a student from your application, but they may still expect a lot from you.
There are many students with part time jobs who work after school or study every night and work all weekend too. While they will be earning great money compared to their friends their grades may also be suffering. There are plenty of students who can work this may hours at their part time job and achieve good marks but if you’re not one of them, make sure you know what your potential employer expects from you.
When you are at your interview, make sure you clearly ask about the hours expected from you in this position and make sure you get a clear answer. The employer should understand that you don’t want your studies to suffer and will often provide you with an honest answer to this question.
There may also be times of the year where these hours will be expected to increase as the company has a busy period and you should find out about these periods too as they may coincide with exams or a major assignment.
Just make sure that you don’t get bullied into accepting a job which requires more hours than you are willing to work. There are many employers out there who are looking for students to fill small gaps in their workforce and you will find one with the right hours for you.
You can also assure the interviewer that you can work extra hours in the holidays and may be able to take on more hours as you learn how to better juggle work and study.
