Everyone looking for work will check the newspaper on the weekend and scour the employment and recruitment websites. This means that there is a lot of competition for these advertised positions.

It is also often the same types of companies which advertise in the paper and on job sites. They are large companies who use these mediums partly because they can afford to pay for the ads and partly because they have enough human resources staff to deal with the influx of applications.

However, while there may regularly be jobs going at these larger companies, have you ever wondered why? If you want to work for a large company, have you considered what your duties will be? You will be the newest kid on the team and will therefore be delegated the most tedious tasks and while you can’t expect to be dealing with top clients and re-writing the marketing plan on your first day, in a larger company your tedious first day duties may continue for many years.

Therefore, when you are looking for work, consider the type of company you want to be working for. If you want to slog it out and work your way up through a large company, you can put in the hard work and do it.

But if you want to use and build everyday on the skills you have learnt in your studies, as well as have a productive and respectful relationship with your colleagues and the management, look at the company you are applying for, not just the job.

Many companies have sections on their website for positions vacant and you can often apply right there online. There may also be an industry association for your chosen industry which can help put you in touch with potential employers and give you access to new networking opportunities.

Networking is also important as many jobs are not even advertised, they are filled by word of mouth, so you don’t want to miss out on your dream job because you were drawing circles in the newspaper.
