First Job Search

As your kids get older, they will be coming to your more and more often to ask for a raise in their pocket money or an extra ten pounds for the weekend. While you want your kids to have fun and be able to buy themselves nice things, you can’t always afford to fund their shopping trips and you also want to ensure they understand they have to earn their spending money too.

Therefore you may have suggested that they get a part time job which will not only teach them responsibility and time management, they will also have the chance to make new friends and earn some extra cash, taking at least one of your kids off of your payroll.

However, you don’t want your kids to be rejected by every employer they apply to so you can give them a hand with their application and their interview technique. For a start, make sure your kids are applying for jobs with a resume. They may think that just because they have never had a job before they have no experience and don’t need a résumé but this is not true.

Firstly they will need a resume as it will include all of their contact details and secondly many school students do have experience they can put on their job applications, they just don’t realise, whether it is babysitting their little brothers or playing on the school tennis team.

Also make sure that when your child goes for an interview, they are scrubbed up, whether they like it or not. While you don’t need to go out and buy your child a suit, they should at least be clean and tidy and not flashing any underwear, no matter how cool everyone else thinks it is.

You also need to make sure that your child takes the interview seriously and treats their interviewer with respect. Being polite and mature will ensure that your child conveys respect to the interviewer and confidence in their skills and of course their willingness to secure this part time job.
