Follow Up

You may think that as soon as you send off your job application to your potential employer, the ball is in their court and all you have to do it wait. While you could simply wait, many employers will get hundreds and hundreds of applications and may take their time creating a short list for an interview.

Therefore, to help ensure that your application is on that short list and not lost in the tidal wave of paper, send a follow up letter after sending your application. Since some employers looking for staff are from large companies, they may be too busy to go through the applications within a few days and get back to everyone.

Some employers may even take several weeks, so if you have not heard anything from your job applications after around two to three weeks, it is time to send a follow up letter.

Your follow up letter should simply include your name and contact details to remind the employer of your application. The letter should state that you are still interested in the position and thank the employer for their time in considering your application.

Writing a letter is a non-invasive way to remind an employer of your application. They can read your letter when they have a chance and not be sprung with a phone call from a stranger they may not be able to immediately reconcile to their job application.  

Reminding your potential employer that you are still interested in the position could help you move to the top of the short list as you are not only showing a continued interest in the position and the company, you are also showing initiative too.
