Have the Answers

After spending a lot of time answering job application questions on paper and waiting for a reply, when you secure the interview you may think the hard part is over. However, your performance in the interview is very important and you need to be fully prepared for any questions the interviewer will ask.

While it is alright to stumble over a few questions as the interviewer will know you are nervous about wanting the job, you will still need to come up with intelligent answers eventually.

Therefore, make sure you know what to expect form your interview and have the basic information for your answers prepared. It is important too that your answers don’t sound rehearsed as this will make the interviewer doubt your sincerity.

Some things to think about before you get to the all important interview are; what your strengths and weaknesses are. Try to reconcile your strengths with the job you are applying for, if it requires team work skills, cite instances in your work experience which show successful outcomes from your team work.

Talking about your weaknesses can be hard but you will be asked, so make sure you come up with an intelligent answer. ‘I’m not very punctual’ or ‘I have trouble taking orders’ are probably not appropriate answers so look for something more along the lines of ‘I can’t tolerate people not pulling their weight in a team’ or ‘I always have to finish something I start’.

Where you see yourself in five or ten years is something only you can answer but make sure you consider this before the interview so you don’t um and ah and appear to have not direction in your life. This question may also be followed by a question about where you think this position will take you so make sure you research the structure of the company for this one.

One of the most important questions the interviewer will want to know about is why do you want this position. This is important to think about before hand as you can then answer with things you like about the company, and tasks you will be completing in this position.
