Is It Really Your Dream Job?

While it can be tempting for you to exaggerate (lie about) your qualifications on your resume and application, you are not the only ones. It is even more tempting for your potential employer to be misleading in their advertisement for their vacant position so go into an interview with your eyes open.

There are some professions where there are many, many qualified people looking for a job and when one is advertised, the employer gets a lot of quality applications. However, there are just as many positions which are harder to fill because of their unappealing duties or a skills shortage in that industry.

Whatever the reason, the employer may have ‘talked up’ their vacant position to encourage people who wouldn’t normally apply for such a job. This is not always a problem if the applicant finds out in the interview that the position is not really something they want to do, however, many applicants can be desperate for jobs and they will believe what they want to believe.

For example, a job may be advertised as promotions or event management and when you secure this exciting sounding job, you find that it also involves mainly administrative and receptionist duties, for a promotions company.

Therefore, no matter how desperately you want a job, make sure you clarify your roles in the interview to ensure you are not disappointed when you have to answer phones instead of write press releases.

Also make sure that you take anything you are unsure of seriously, for example, if you are asked ‘how do you feel about washing dishes’ don’t laugh it off as you really may be required to wash the dishes.
