Job Referees

When applying for almost any job, your potential employer will ask for several referees whom they can call to verify your experience and whether your personality would suit the job vacancy they have.

Therefore, choosing appropriate referees is very important as while your potential employer may not call each referee you have listed, they will call at least one or two to get a sense of who you are.

This is why it is important to list people who can vouch for either your experience or for you personally. There is no point putting your hairdresser down as a referee when you only see her for an hour once every eight weeks. It is also important to put down people who can professionally detail your experience, this means listing your manager at the supermarket, not your friend who worked the register next to you.

You also need to remember to tell the people you are listing as referees that you are applying for jobs and listing them as a reference. This allows them to be prepared for the call and have all of your good points and experience in the front of their mind. You may even want to provide your referees with a copy of your resume to give them some context to the reference they will give you.

Also when asking your referees if you can list them on your resume, make sure they have something positive to say about you and that they won’t either maliciously comment poorly on you when asked, or bring up an unflattering incident you may have forgotten about.

When listing referees, three is a good number to list and make sure that it is a mixture of personal and professional referees to give your potential employer a broader picture of who you are.
