What to Know When Job Hunting

Resolving to get a new job in 2007 is one thing, but it’s not enough to ensure you will be enjoying work in the New Year. Your résumé is the first thing your potential employer will see so make sure your first impression counts to ensure you get what you want this year.

Everyone has heard that ‘It’s who you know not what you know’. However, like with anything if you haven’t go the ‘what’, the ‘who’ can’t help you. The ‘what’ in the case of job hunting is knowing what to include in your CV, knowing what format the covering letter should be in and knowing how the employer wants you to respond to the ad they have placed.

For example, many advertised positions include a ‘Person Specification’ or ‘Role Specification’. This is often obtained from the company’s website or office. Including specifications is asking the applicant if they can complete all of the tasks required for the position. If the applicant fails to address each specification in their application, they either appear lazy, or it highlights the fact that they don’t have the necessary qualifications. 

Some employers also ask for the applications to be in a particular format, be it emailed, posted or on disk, so make sure you read the advertisement carefully and apply in the correct format.

You may think that getting the interview is the hardest part of the job process; however, if you nail the first impression with a snappy CV, you’ll be explaining your strengths, weaknesses and greatest achievements in no time.
