Resume Formatting...

When writing and compiling a resume to send to your potential employer, it is important that you remember some simple formatting tips to ensure your application is taken seriously and the employer understands all of the information in your application.

Firstly, you need to remember that this is a professional document and therefore you need to think carefully about the fonts you use. For a start, you shouldn’t use more than three fonts in your job application and preferably two.

You should choose your fonts carefully and use a serif font for the body text as the connecting letters and soft edges of the font make it easier to read large amounts of text. You should therefore use a contrasting sanserif font for headings as it will provide clear sectioning to your resume and guide your potential employer’s eye between the sections.

When choosing which serif and sanserif font to use you need to consider its readability and the message it sends. While Monotype may look pretty, it is very hard to read and a swirly curly resume runs the risk of not being taken seriously. It is harder to go wrong with a sanserif font as they are by nature clear, but there are a few which can be a bit too confronting and while Impact may seem like a good idea for an eye-catching heading, it can also be hard to read in its boldness.

It is therefore best to stick with old favourites such as Arial or Arial Black for your headings and Times New Roman for your text. It is also a good idea to stick to these generic fonts as they are some of the originals from the very beginnings of PC word processing programs and this is especially important if you are emailing your application as you don’t know the system your potential employer is using and you don’t want your carefully chosen and formatted font to come out as code.

You should also try to avoid a lot of fancy graphics and designs as they detract from the information and again may lend less credibility to your application.
